The Irish Education System

Ireland has a reputation for educational excellence, with a Junior & Senior Cycle sandwiches between its renowned Transition Year Programme.

Ireland’s secondary education spans three years of Junior Cycle (ages 12-15), followed by  Transition Year, then two years of Senior Cycle culminating in the Leaving Certificate (ages 16-18). This structure emphasises holistic development, critical thinking, and practical skills through a broad, balanced curriculum.

The Junior Cycle at St. Columba’s features 30 hours of weekly classes across core subjects like English, Irish, Maths, and electives, assessed via school-based projects and formal state exams.

For international students, our Transition Year Programme eases adaptation, blending academics with excursions, leadership projects, and cultural immersion ahead of Leaving Cert preparation

The Irish Leaving Certificate offers a rigorous, internationally recognised qualification that unlocks top universities worldwide, including the UK, Europe, US, and Ireland. Its broad curriculum emphasises critical thinking, essay writing, and practical skills, with proven success in competitive fields like medicine, engineering, and law. Pupils typically studying six to eight subjects including mandatory English and Mathematics.
